Period 101

A period happens because of hormonal changes in the body. It’s the release of the uterine lining (in the form of blood, tissue, mucus, etc) from the uterus, and this blood is released through the vagina.  

But what actually happens?

The ovaries release the hormones (oestrogen and progesterone). 

At the same time, these same hormones cause ovulation to occur. This is the act of releasing an egg from the ovaries. 

These same hormones also help build up the lining of the uterus (this is done to prepare for a fertilised egg (which is fertilised via a sperm cell) to attach to it and start developing). If the egg is fertilised, it attaches to the wall of the uterus.

If there is no fertilised egg, this uterus lining breaks down and bleeds. This is what is called a period.

The process starts from the top again. 

Vaginal discharge is the term for fluid or mucus that comes from the vagina. Some amount of vaginal discharge is normal, unless it occurs with itching, burning, or other bothersome symptoms.

Period pain is common and a normal part of your menstrual cycle. Most menstruators get it at some point in their lives. It usually feels like painful muscle cramps in the stomach, which can spread to the back and thighs. The pain sometimes comes in intense spasms, while at other times it may be dull but more constant.

A typical period cycle lasts around 3-7 days. It changes from menstruator to menstruator.

Your period will usually follow a 28-31 day cycle, which is absolutely normal. However, you may even experience your period coming earlier or later. Your period can change its dates based on bodily changes (putting on/losing weight), psychological changes (stress/illnesses), or geographical changes (timezone shifts).

Most menstruators get their first period when they're around 12. But getting it any time between the ages of 10 and 15 is OK. Every menstruator’s body has its own schedule.

There are some clues that it will start soon:

  • Breast tenderness
  • Vaginal discharge fluid 
  • Acne 
  • Mood changes
  • Cravings
  • Bloating

PMS (or premenstrual syndrome) is a condition caused by the changes in your body’s hormone levels before your period starts. Usually, PMS symptoms can begin as early as 14 days before your period, though they typically disappear within a few days of menstruation. They may, however, last up to day 7 of menstruation.

  • Acne breakouts/greasy hair 
  • Loss of interest in sex

The first step is to ensure that your hands are clean - once you have washed them with soap and dried them, take the Sparkle pad out of its outer wrapper. Peel off the central release paper and attach the pad securely to the central inner portion of your undergarment. Remove the release paper from the wings, and wrap the wings securely around the edges of your underwear to secure the pad in place. Now, you’re good to wear your undergarment with your Sparkle pad!

Wings help secure the pad more effectively in your undergarment, in a way that minimizes accidental leaks and bunching as much as possible. However, at the end of the day, it is still the menstruator’s personal preference when it comes to their choice of period product.

Remove the pad by gripping a clean edge between your fingers and peeling it off your underwear. If your pad has wings, you'll want to pull those off first.

Peel off the central release paper and attach the panty liner securely to the central inner portion of your undergarment.

Panty liners are safe to use, even for daily use - you can use them to prevent panty staining, light spotting, or even to absorb regular vaginal discharge.

Most doctors/medical professionals do not recommend using these items, as they may cause rashes, itching or irritation near your sensitive parts. We believe that your skin down there should be able to breathe and feel like itself, so that’s why our pads and pantyliners do not contain artificial dyes, fragrances, chlorine bleach, or harsh chemicals.

The vagina is a self-cleaning part of the body and has a delicately balanced mini-ecosystem with a protective lining and a self-cleansing membrane. Mild, dermatologist-tested soap and water are recommended.

While Sparkle pads and liners have not been designed specifically for incontinence, some of our customers have told us that they’ve used our products for light bladder leaks.

Most medical experts recommend that you change your pad every 4-6 hours, though you can change it more often depending on your period flow.

Sparkle products are dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic; they are made with safe, sustainable, and skin-friendly ingredients, and do not contain conventional plastics, harsh chemicals, synthetic superabsorbents (SAPs), artificial fragrances, chlorine bleach, or dyes.

Yes, our pads are dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic.

Sparkle pads reached a disintegration percentage of 100% in less than 8 weeks, when tested according to ISO 16929 (Standard Test Method for Determination of the Degree of Disintegration of Plastic Material under Defined Composting Conditions in a Pilot-scale Test).

Note: Biodegradation and disintegration of any product depends on a number of factors such as the disposal location and other specific conditions.

Sparkle pads reached relative biodegradation of around 75% when compared to the positive reference (cellulose), and absolute biodegradation of around 60% after 15 days of incubation (which represents around one year in a landfill), according to ASTM D5511 (Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under High-Solids Anaerobic-Digestion Conditions).

Conventional pads that contain large amounts of plastic remain unchanged in a landfill for around 500 years.

Note: Biodegradation and disintegration of any product depends on a number of factors such as the disposal location and other specific conditions.

Composting any materials containing human waste or bodily fluids requires high composting temperatures and specific composting conditions to safely kill harmful bacteria/pathogens.

Backyard/home composting process typically occurs at a much lower temperature, and does not reach the high temperature required to kill the pathogens found in human waste.

Since backyard composting does not create the specific composting conditions for safely composting human waste and killing harmful pathogens, you cannot compost your used period products in your backyard.

Municipal/curbside composting programs typically accept food waste, lawn trimmings, cardboard pieces, etc, which use a very different composting process compared to the composting conditions that are required to safely process human waste and kill harmful bacteria/pathogens. 

Mixing used period products that contain human waste and bodily fluids contaminates the composting stream, so used period products should never be mixed with city compost bins/green bins. In many municipalities, it is often illegal to place items containing human waste, such as period products, in the city compost bins.

Please do not flush your pads or liners. Wrap your used pad/liner in the wrapper, and dispose of it in a waste bin.

Orders are processed and shipped Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Most orders are fulfilled and shipped within 1-3 business days. Once your order ships, you will receive a confirmation email with tracking information.

Once the order has been shipped, it typically arrives within 5-7 business days.

Returns & Refunds

As our products fall into the hygiene/intimate care category, unfortunately, we do not accept returns for opened or used products due to the sensitive nature of the items. 

  • We do not offer refunds or replacements for items ordered incorrectly by the customer.
  • We do not offer refunds or returns for subscription orders that were not cancelled prior to fulfilment.
  • Refunds are issued in the form of store credit.

Unfortunately, we are unable to process returns for items purchased through our retail partners. We recommend that you contact the retailer directly for their return and exchange policies.

Payments

All major credit cards are accepted including: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. If you’re interested only in a one-time purchase (fyi, this is not available for subscription orders at this time), we also offer Shop Pay, Google Pay and PayPal as payment choices. Currently, please note that we only accept one form of payment per order.

As we want to make your subscription process as smooth as possible, we have programmed our system to automatically process your subscription on the same day each month, or have it get renewed according to your system’s settings (i.e., every 2 months or every 3 months). 

You can skip or cancel your subscription at any point. However, once your order has been placed, processed, or is in transit, it cannot be cancelled. If you have any questions regarding our subscriptions, please contact us at care@getsparkle.life.

We will be charging your credit card on the day that your subscription will be getting renewed.

Your personal information is always kept safe and will not be shared with anyone. We only use your personal information in order to provide you with the best possible service.

At this time, Sparkle gift cards can only be used to place new orders, and can not be applied to existing subscriptions. However, if you are already subscribed to Sparkle, you can always use your gift card to make a one-time purchase!

You can apply Sparkle discount codes at the time of checkout. Please note: some codes are product-specific and may not apply to every product on the website.

Yes, we do! We currently offer gift cards in increments of $10, $25, $50, and $100. When you purchase a Sparkle gift card, you’ll receive an e-gift card via email, which you can then forward directly to the recipient of your choice.

Once you purchase a Sparkle gift card, you'll receive an email with the gift card code and the dollar amount selected for the gift card. 

To send to a friend or family member, simply forward the email to your loved ones for them to use the gift card on getsparkle.life!
